THE RISE OF

Third Category Consulting

The consulting industry is changing.

Influenced by technology disruption, greater spend visibility, subject matter expertise, knowledge transfer, execution focus and supplier rationalization.

To better understand the changing landscape, RGP surveyed companies on what they look for in a consulting partner, how they select companies and how their needs are being met.

We found that a gap exists between what clients need and what has traditionally been offered. That’s where RGP comes in. We represent a third, untapped category that provides hands-on subject matter expertise and complete knowledge transfer back to the business.

Since joining RGP in 1999 as the company’s first corporate counsel, Kate Duchene has operated in numerous executive roles – Legal, Corporate Secretary, Human Resources, Marketing and RGP Legal. Now, as Chief Executive Officer and President, she is “humbled, honored – and most of all – excited to lead the organization through transformation, growth, and renewal.”

Kate is focused on business strategy, capital structure and resource allocation, executive management, shareholder management, enterprise risk management and employee productivity and engagement. She is committed to setting up the structure, processes, and practices that will enable the company to execute strategies effectively and drive desired outcomes. Having worked deeply in the RGP Legal business, positioning, scoping and working closely with clients, Kate understands what needs to be done to move the business forward and evolve as a company.

Prior to joining RGP, Kate practiced law with O’Melveny & Myers LLP, in Los Angeles, California. She focused on litigation, specializing in defense-side labor and employment matters. In 2010, Kate was honored by the Orange County Business Journal as Outstanding General Counsel of a Public Company with Revenue over $200 Million. That same year, she was named to OC METRO’s “Hot 25” list of top professionals in Orange County, California.

Kate received her J.D., cum laude, from New York University School of Law and her B.A. in Political Science from Stanford University. She serves as president emeritus on the board of directors of Human Options, an organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Kate also serves on the boards of the California Minority Counsel Program and Chapman University’s Fowler School of Law, Business Emphasis Program Advisory Group.

Kate and her husband Tim have two children in college. Kate enjoys weekends in her kitchen with friends and family and is always looking for a great book or recipe.

Kerry Barrett is currently the Executive Vice President, Head of Integration at RGP. Previously, she served as Chief Executive Officer of Accretive Solutions. Kerry joined Accretive Solutions as Northern California Market Leader in August 2012. During her tenure, she worked with the Northern California leadership team to expand several of the firm’s core offerings including IPO Readiness, Business Outsourcing Services, Stock Plan Administration, Sarbanes-Oxley Services, and IT Security and Compliance. Barrett’s success was recognized in November 2013, when she was promoted to Senior Vice President, Sales, and Operations, where she was tasked with accelerating overall firm growth. She also addressed key operational challenges and rolled out a series of programs to enhance the visibility of the firm as a thought leader in the marketplace.
Prior to joining Accretive Solutions, Barrett was with Deloitte, as well as other national professional services firms Hudson Financial Solutions and Parson Group, where she served in management and sales roles. She holds an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and a B.A. from Lehigh. She lives in San Francisco, California, with her husband and three children.

As RGP’s Chief Accounting Officer, John Bower is responsible for all aspects of the company’s day-to-day accounting functions, including financial reporting, operations reporting, general accounting, invoicing and accounts payable. John serves as a partner to the field in their efforts to grow the RGP brand and is a member of the global leadership team responsible for the stewardship of the company’s future.

John began his RGP career in 1998 as the company’s controller and served in integral roles during the company’s transition from Deloitte in 1999 and its IPO in December 2000. In 2005, John was promoted to Senior Vice President-Finance. Prior to joining RGP, John was a Senior Manager at Deloitte and Director of SEC Reporting at FHP International.

John holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Southern California, graduating Summa Cum Laude and is a Certified Public Accountant.

As Executive Vice President of Revenue, Tim Brackney leads RGP’s global sales function which includes a strategic account program and salesforces focused on enterprise accounts, small and mid-market clients as well as new business development. Sales operations and marketing focused on demand generation, marketing automation, field marketing, and sales enablement are also key elements of global sales.

Previously, Tim led RGP’s practice offices and operations in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, where he successfully developed and executed growth strategies centered around focused market segmentation, built and retained strong teams and ensured excellence in client delivery.

“My whole career has been spent at the nexus between client and solution, simply put that’s where the magic happens! The search for a better way to serve clients led me to RGP from PwC a dozen years ago, as I was intrigued by a business model ahead of its time, a unique vision and an entrepreneurial culture. All those things and the ability to work every day with smart, motivated and talented colleagues has kept me here past my initial expectations.”

Outside of work, Tim serves on the Board of Directors of the Lucille Packard Foundation for Children’s Health and is involved with other philanthropic causes benefiting children. These interests arose for Tim from “having won the lottery of life: being adopted as an infant from an orphanage in Vietnam and then living in the developing country of Bangladesh for over a decade.” Currently, Tim resides in Silicon Valley with his wife, Chelyn, and their two children, Ben and Corinne.

Tim earned a B.S. Business Administration with Honors from the University of Notre Dame and holds an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.

Since joining RGP in 1997, Tanja Cebula has been instrumental in the firm’s growth, including her current role where she is leading a global talent transformation and human capital strategy across the firm. As Executive Vice President of Talent, she is committed to ensuring we have a best in class talent strategy and operating model that helps attract and retain premier talent in order to service our clients’ evolving needs.

Tanja celebrated 20 years with RGP in January 2017, having spent 18 of those years responsible for servicing our clients and building our business beginning with the launch of the Portland practice in 1997. In 2000, Tanja was promoted to Regional Managing Director of the Southern California offices and over time expanded her leadership to 18 offices across the Western U.S. In 2007 she was promoted to Senior Vice President of the Western Region and in June 2014, she was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer. Prior to RGP, Tanja was a Marketing Director with Johnson & Johnson Medical and a Senior Auditor with Deloitte.

Outside of RGP, Tanja serves on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee for Oregon State University’s Foundation. She is a 15+ year breast cancer survivor and co-founder of the Be Aware Foundation, an organization dedicated to educating and inspiring women to follow early detection guidelines.

Tanja received her B.S. in Accounting from Oregon State University and her MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management where she specialized in Strategy, Marketing, International Business and Organizational Design.

As Executive Vice President of Integrated Solutions, Tracey is responsible for interpreting market and client demand, setting strategy and building solutions and capabilities to drive new sales and growth opportunities. Tracey believes that investing in repeatable solutions will allow RGP to more effectively respond to client opportunities in a thoughtful and timely manner. “It will allow RGP to be proactive in bringing ideas and insights to our clients early in the process of them evaluating alternatives.”

Tracey joined RGP in 2001 as an Information Management consultant, providing expertise in system implementations and business intelligence. During her four years as a consultant, she worked with major clients, leading system implementations and implementing global performance management platforms. In addition to having been a consultant, Tracey has been a Client Service Director, Practice Leader, Managing Director of the New Jersey practice and Global Managing Director of the Information Management practice. Some of her proudest accomplishments include: launching RGP’s Managing Consultant role, creating the IM regional leadership structure and building strong partnerships with colleagues around the world.

Tracey serves on the Board of VenturesATL, a not-for-profit startup, providing employment services to adults with autism. She also serves on the Seton Hall Board for Woman’s Leadership Program, as well as the Leadership Development Council. Tracey spends as much time as possible with her twelve and nine year old boys, who are very active. Thankfully she loves sports!

He leads the interaction between RGP and the investment community, including outlining plans for building long-term value for the company and leading RGP’s corporate development efforts. “I am passionate about driving growth and enabling talent. I am excited to be in a senior leadership role with the initiatives we are moving forward with.”

Herb’s RGP career began in January 2012 as a Client Service Director, leading the Finance and Accounting practice in Atlanta. He transitioned to Managing Director of the Atlanta office in the fall of 2013, which then brought him to the role of CFO in the summer of 2016. Prior to joining RGP, Herb served as a CFO for both public and private companies in the service and manufacturing industries. He has had direct responsibility for finance & accounting, information technology, supply chain, human resources, mergers & acquisitions, and customer service. Herb has a first-hand understanding of the issues that today’s executives face in a difficult business environment and has utilized his broad experience base and business acumen to deliver solutions to clients.

Herb’s current role brought about a new home base, because in the fall of 2016 he and his wife made the leap to San Clemente, California, after 21 years in Atlanta. When not working, Herb enjoys time with his family, reading, playing tennis and practicing photography.

Herb studied nuclear and industrial engineering at Georgia Tech and later received a B.S. in accounting from Columbus State University. He earned his CPA certification in 1994.
